Longboard Size Guide

Size guide for longboarding

Choosing a longboard can feel overwhelming at first. Sizes, shapes, wheel setups and riding styles all matter. This guide covers the basics so you can narrow your search.

Before you buy, decide how you will use the board. Some longboards are built for commuting. Others are stiff and stable for steep hills and high speeds. Surf-inspired shapes deliver a carve-heavy, surf-like feel on pavement.

Different longboard shapes

The right shape makes a big difference. Match the deck to your riding style:

A cruiser longboard is often surf-inspired and built for smooth, flowing carves — a surf-like feel on the street. Smaller cruiser setups are called mini cruisers: compact boards you can carry on a bus or train.

A downhill longboard is stiffer and more stable for steep hills and high speeds. Downhill decks also slide well thanks to their shape and construction.

A freeride board blends cruising, carving and slides — a strong choice for beginners. Most riders find freeride setups easier to learn on before specializing in one discipline.

A surfskate uses special front trucks that turn fast and let you generate speed by pumping — without pushing off the ground.

Truck mounting

Longboard truck mounting: top mount and drop-through

Two truck mounting styles dominate longboarding: top mount and drop-through.

On a top-mounted board, the deck sits higher above the ground. That makes the ride more lively and responsive — great for surf-style carving. Top mounts can feel less forgiving for beginners, but they are also used by top downhill riders who want maximum grip and control.

A drop-through longboard sits lower and feels more stable. It is an all-round, easy-to-learn setup — ideal for commuting, casual riding and learning slides. Most riders are happiest on drop-through mounts.
