Material:

Most snorkels are made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), which is a strong and durable material. PVC is impact and scratch resistant, making it ideal for underwater use. It is also lightweight, which makes the snorkel easier to use, especially during longer swims.
Some models also have silicone elements to provide extra flexibility and comfort. Silicone is typically used for mouthpieces or other flexible parts, where the soft and adaptable material ensures a tight and comfortable fit. Silicone is also hypoallergenic and known for its wear resistance.

Type:

When choosing a snorkel, it is important to know the different types that suit different swimming styles and environments. Here is an overview of the three primary snorkel types:

The traditional snorkel has an open tube that allows free air flow from the surface to the mouth. This type of snorkel is simple in design and works well in calm water conditions. The disadvantage of the traditional snorkel is that water can enter the tube if water is splashed in or if the user dives underwater. The user must blow the water out of the tube when they return to the surface.
A semi-dry snorkel is designed to minimize the amount of water entering the tube. This type of snorkel has a protective flap at the top which helps keep water out, but it is still possible for some water to enter during strong waves or while diving. Semi-dry snorkels are ideal for those who snorkel in more turbulent water conditions but want to avoid most of the incoming water.
Full-dry snorkels have a valve at the top of the tube which closes automatically when the snorkel is under water. This completely prevents water from entering and eliminates the need to blow the water out when you get to the surface. Full-dry snorkels are ideal for those who want maximum comfort and protection against water ingress, making them perfect for both beginners and those who prefer a hassle-free snorkeling experience.

Gender:

Snorkels are designed to suit different age groups and genders to ensure optimal comfort and functionality.

Snorkels for adults (men and women) are designed with larger mouthpieces and longer tubes to suit both men and women. These snorkels have adjustable straps and ergonomic mouthpieces that ensure a comfortable and tight fit, regardless of the user's gender.
Snorkels for children are specially adapted to smaller faces and heads. With a smaller mouthpiece and shorter tube, they are easier for children to use and ensure maximum comfort and safety during snorkeling.

Mouthpiece:

The mouthpiece of a snorkel is a crucial part, as it ensures comfort and functionality during use. There are primarily two materials that mouthpieces are made of: PVC and silicone.

A mouthpiece made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is known for its durability and resistance to wear. PVC is an economical material that provides a solid fit and is easy to maintain. It is often used in more affordable snorkel models and can withstand repeated use without being damaged.
A silicone mouthpiece is softer and more flexible, ensuring a more comfortable fit around the mouth. Silicone is hypoallergenic and adapts to the user's mouth to reduce discomfort during longer snorkelling experiences. Because of its flexibility and comfort, silicone is often preferred in premium snorkel models.
